最近、私が心酔するある世界的に著名な水彩画家のフェースブックに、面白半分にコメント

したら、なんと返信文が帰ってきました。友達何万人、コメント何千件というその方が、

どこの馬の骨とも知れない私なぞのコメントに、自ら（おそらく）返信してくれたとは、

ただただ感激でした。（皆さんもこのような経験おありでせうか。）

英語圏の方なので当然英語でのやり取りでしたが、送るに際し一応、ある英語のプロに添削を

依頼したところ下記のようになりました。アマチュアは、つい”スタンス”などの外来語を

使ってしまって、妙な英語になってしまうものなのですね。英語圏国でご活躍の皆様はいかが

ですか、そのあたりはもう克服されたでせうか。とかく、英作文は英会話に勝るとも劣らず

やっかいではありますね。

再びダジャレ記憶法の実体験をしました。（実はいろいろな場面で何度も体験してはいます。）
4月号本題1）の単語fathomですが、6/17のチャールストン教会の出来事の後、ニュースに一斉にunfathomableという単語が飛び交い出し、瞬時にあのfathomから「不可解な、言うに言われぬ」といった意味であろうことが想像でき、またこういう場面で(fathomableよりunfathomableが多いことからfathomは否定的な場面で使われ易い）使われる単語であることが分かり、まさにダジャレ記憶法の実践例（語呂合わせならぬストーリー仕立てでしたが）そのものでした。下にニュース例文を掲載します。（全て6/18の各社の新聞記事からのものです。）例文にあるambiguousやderangedも、過去にダジャレたもので、やはり思い出すことができ、ダジャレ記憶法のすばらしさを体感することができました。どうか皆様も是非、体験し、ますます単語力をつけられますことを願ってやみません。

ところで、最近、新幹線で焼身自殺した事件が大きく報道され、まさに”unfathomable”として扱われましたが、この事件が私のような、豊かではなく、苦労に苦労を重ねて今に至った初老の人間にとっては、ある意味”fathomable”に思える時もあり、自分でもやばいなーと感じることがあります。詳しくはまた後日に取り上げたく思いますが、どうか奇異に思われることなく「一体なぜか」に思いをはせていただけましたら感謝感激ではあります。

　最近、ハーバード大学マイケル・サンデル教授による、ご存知白熱教室が放映されました。世界各国の公共放送に携わるメディア専門家たちによる”公共放送の持つ役割”についての討論で、
大変興味深いものでした。ただ、残念だったのは、出席した他国の全ての関係者が英語を駆使していた一方、日本人だけは日本語で通していたことでした。我がNHKの職員が同時通訳を介した姿には、がっかりしました。海外で英語を駆使して活躍されている皆さん、いかがですか。天下のNHK職員がこれでは、情けないの一言ですね。（国谷さんでも出せばよかったのに）
　海外で語学学習に励んでいる若い皆さん、そしてこのブログをにやにや見ている海外在住の皆さん、皆さんたちはどうぞ頑張って下さい。白熱教室に参加し、サンデル教授と英語で丁々発止やって下さい。私のできなかった夢を、みなさんに託したいと、心よりご期待申し上げる次第です。
